Multigenerational Additions for the Whole Family

Multigenerational Additions

Multigenerational living is no longer just a practical choice. It has become a preferred lifestyle. As families look for ways to stay connected while maintaining independence, in-law suites are redefining what it means to live together.

A Case Study in Multigenerational Living

This residence exemplifies how comfort, privacy, and elevated design come together seamlessly, while also telling a deeper story. Originally built by DeSimone more than 20 years ago, the home served as the foundation for a growing family and a lasting relationship. As returning customers, the family trusted us once again to build a mother-in-law suite, a testament to the quality and durability of the original home and how well it has stood the test of time. Today, as the next generation returns, the space has been thoughtfully reimagined to reflect evolving needs, for both the older generation and the adult children moving in, along with personal style and a renewed focus on living well together.

Attached to the main home, the 1,634-square-foot mother-in-law suite offers a fully self-contained living experience including a bedroom, living room, kitchen, and ensuite full bath as well as full laundry room and ample closet space. With its own private entryway, driveway, and garage, the suite allows for true independence allowing residence in both the main home and suite to come and go freely on their own terms while still maintaining a close, connected relationship without compromise.

At the heart of the suite, a modern kitchen anchors the space with an open, flowing layout designed for both everyday living and entertaining. Thoughtful details were incorporated to create continuity, such as the fireplace hardware mirroring the kitchen. These subtle, intentional touches enhance flow and reinforce the seamless feel of the open living space.

The adjoining living room is warm, refined, and filled with natural light. A gas fireplace serves as the focal point, framed by high ceilings and distinctive half-round windows. The custom built-in surrounding the fireplace echoes a signature element from the original home, while natural sliced stone, carefully selected to match the updated exterior façade, creates a cohesive design that carries from outside to in.

Every element of the suite was designed with livability and comfort in mind. A spacious bedroom provides a restful retreat, complemented by a walk-in closet offering generous storage and shelving space. The bathrooms reflect both beauty and function, including a custom-built vanity and a walk-in shower with built-in seating and integrated support bars for added safety. Personal touches, such as the homeowner’s affinity for blue, are woven into the suite, most notably in the bathroom, where cabinetry and tilework were carefully coordinated to achieve a cohesive aesthetic.

Beyond the interior, a private deck overlooking the backyard extends the living space outdoors, offering a quiet place to relax while remaining connected to the main home. Together, these features create a balanced environment that supports independence, well-being, and everyday ease.

The transformation extends beyond the suite itself. The home’s exterior has been completely refreshed, with a newly updated façade that is both sophisticated and visually striking.

More than a renovation, this project reflects how homes are evolving to meet the needs of modern families. Multigenerational suites like this enhance quality of life while adding long-term value, often boosting a home’s desirability, market appeal and sometimes commanding prices 20–35% higher than comparable homes without them. With thoughtful design, personal detail, and a deep understanding of how families live today, this home offers a compelling vision of what it means to live together comfortably, beautifully, and with purpose.
